Screencasting best practices and benefits in the classroom.
A major benefit of screencasting is that the student and parent can watch the screencast at a time when it’s best for them because learning doesn’t always take place in an academic setting.

Additionally, the students can absorb the information at their own pace by pausing and rewatching portions. Screencasts add a personal touch in ways that other methods simply cannot.

Examples of common screencast are: Tutorials, Video Lessons, Recorded
Presentations and much more.

Screencasting not only saves you time answering the same questions over and over, but it has been proven that 80% of viewers can recall a video they have seen in the past 30 days.

We will be using Screencast-o-matic. Please download the free application before the session.
Please bring content for creating a screencast.

For more information check out the document ScreencastingBestPractices in the session.

ClassDojo: Classroom Management Made Fun! (part one)
ClassDojo is an online classroom management system that I have used in multiple grade levels and all the students that have used it absolutely love it. In a nutshell, ClassDojo is a fantastic and easy way to monitor positive and negative behaviors and have students earn points for potential rewards. One of those rewards while earning positive points that I have used in the past is being able to create and change their "monster". Each students starts out with their own Dojo monster that they can customize and there are endless styles, colors, figures, and characters to choose from. Not only can you use this system to manage individual students, but there are also features that allow you to group students and give or take away points to the whole group, or to the entire class. When you are working with the points themselves, another fantastic feature is that it tells the students exactly what they did to earn points or have those points taken away. For example, some of the positive points categories are: "On Task", "Participating", "Working Hard" and some of the negative point categories are: "Off Task", "Talking Out Of Turn", "Unprepared" and any of these categories can be edited or modified by the teacher. When I used these in elementary school, I was also able to connect the parents to our ClassDojo and it was an excellent way for them to see how their student was progressing or how they did in class that day. You can also send emails, post pictures, and add class stories to the site! Teachers have the capability to add and create as many Dojo classes as they need, which is a great feature for middle school and high school teachers. One incredible new addition that they just created this year is student mode. In this mode, students can add their own private stories that only their parents will be able to see and the teacher approves all posts. Some other excellent teacher tools within ClassDojo are: the ability to take attendance, use a class timer, randomize which students should earn points, and then there are two additional tabs called "Big Ideas" and "Toolkit". All of these features can be accessed directly from the site or the app within the app store for free! One thing I absolutely love about the "Big Ideas" tab is that you can create little mini social-emotional lessons for your students about growth mindset, perseverance, empathy, gratitude and mindfulness. These mini video lessons are put into words students can understand and are excellent ways to start the day off on a very positive note. Within the "Toolkit" tab, you can do even MORE such as: post class directions for the day, play music for the class while they work, there is a group maker for group work days, a noise meter to watch how loud the class gets, Think-Pair-Share, and a "Today" feature to greet students with an introduction message. You can still access all of these things through a computer, but for easy access and less problems, it is recommended that teachers and students use the free app. Some anticipated outcomes for this presentation would be to have teachers play around with this app, so they would need some sort of device to practice on, but cellphones work as well. I would go through all of the basics I mentioned above and if my given time slot allows, I would go into the details about the additional "Big Ideas" and the "Toolkit" features. ClassDojo has completely changed the way my classroom runs and I have been complimented many times on how well my management is. I credit that success to ClassDojo and everything it has helped me with. I would highly recommend teachers to use this and look forward to the potential opportunity to show other teachers how this amazing free app can be utilized.

ClassDojo: Classroom Management Made Fun! (part two)
"Part One" of my two sessions will be for beginners that need to learn how to set-up ClassDojo and access many of the beginner features. For more advanced features and using all of the tools in the ClassDojo "Toolbox", I will also be having a "Part Two" later in the morning for more intermediate/advanced work on ClassDojo.

Here is a detailed description all about ClassDojo:

If We Don't Teach It 'They' Will Be Forcing Perspective One Human At A Time
Humans of all sizes are feeling divided yet closer, more educated, or more ignorant? It seems like a bipolar mess reaping havoc one human at a time. But perhaps it's just humans and the algorithms they make forcing our perspectives.

Join this active learning session if you want to:
  • Look at the global landscape of media, values, and education today instead of just one vantage point that is being manipulated daily by transformational technology advancements and an economy craving human attention.
  • Test your own biases and triggers so you can gain compassion for your staff, community, and students.
  • Practice at least three media literacy strategies that any K-20 educator can use with kids/peers in our classrooms/schools to help combat misinformation/disinformation.
'Forcing Perspective One Human At A Time' looks to inspire educators and administrators alike to weave media literacy strategies into their work; instead of allowing social media, trolls, and clickbait to reap havoc on their student's mindsets, opportunities, and daily choices.

Bottom-Up Data Governance:It's not as overwhelming as you think!
Why should you care about data governance for your organization?

Are you tired and frustrated of creating reports and sending to users only to find that your data is not accurate? Wouldn't it be nice to have confidence in your report data?

Data analysts, report builders, programmers, and IT developers work with organizational data daily. They understand the need for defined processes and structure to ensure consistency within the sphere of data integrity. The lack of documentation, uniform processes, and convention can lead to frustration and even apathy.

Don't wait for leadership to deliver these 'rules' for your data sandbox.
Start with your team and experience the benefits of data governance from the bottom-up.

Here are some of the early benefits that West Ada School District has experienced
  • Assurance that our metrics are accurate
  • Insight into what the most important metrics might truly be
  • Greater confidence in the analytics that we provide to school district administration

Building Capacity with a Peer Tutoring Center
One thing most educators can agree on would be that we wish we could multiply ourselves to provide more small group and 1:1 instruction to students with specific skill needs. One great way to accomplish this is through a well trained peer tutoring team. Anna Durfee built a successful tutoring center at Compass Academy that has been helping students for five years. Through tech resources like a scheduling program and collaborative documents we can share the tips and tricks discovered through trial and error.

Everything I Know about Team Building and Working with Others I Learned in Middle School
Successful STEM activities, whether in the classroom or the workplace, require working together in a team environment.A constant challenge in the STEM setting is getting people to work together cohesively toward a common goal.Because working together can result in a test of wills, resolution can vary.

This team of two middle school engineering teachers will offer ideas and solutions to the day-to-day encounters in the STEM setting.Whether a one-day goal or a long-term project, focusing on team outcomes requires consistent reminders and team building activities. These ideas can work at all grade levels and beyond.

#BookSnaps – Snapchat for Annotation & Digital Visualization
During this interactive workshop, participants will actively explore the science, creation, and impact of #BookSnaps.

The Snapchat app is a primary form of communication for students of all ages. Why not teach them digital citizenship by showing them a relevant way to utilize the app for learning purposes, or as I like to call it--EDU-Awesomeness! Let’s speak the students’ language using Snapchat to share excerpts of a book while annotating with #BookSnaps.

This fascinating strategy engages both hemispheres of the brain and increases learning retention. Join this workshop session to explore how students AND staff create BookSnap reflections to make their thinking visible.
Since August 2016, school districts and students all over the world (seventeen different countries) are creating #BookSnaps and sharing their love of learning.

*For Non-Snapchat users, we will also explore creating #BookSnaps with Google apps, and you will leave with an abundance of resources to utilize the #BookSnaps strategy no matter the content area.
#BookSnaps are relevant, engaging, and learning disguised as FUN. You don’t want to miss this session!

Intro to Teaching Cybersecurity
Getting your middle and high school students into cybersecurity isn't as hard as most people think and requires little instructor knowledge to get started. We will cover using Capture The Flag (CTF) challenges and an opportunity from the Air Force titled CyberPatriots. Time will be given to explore these resources after introduction.

NOTE: Our time was reduced to 45 minutes, so the CyberPatriots hands-on time will be a demo instead.

Slides can be found here.

In conjunction with Zane Durkin and Preston Pace of NeverLAN CTF.

REAL Engagement
Would you like to peek into the minds of the learners you serve? Yes.

Then, prepare to have your mind blown during this workshop.

Participants will explore a variety of opportunities to respond to any content area, at any grade level, both with and without technology. You will leave with a treasure chest of precious gems to boost engagement and amplify student voice within your learning environment.
