Using Digital Tools to Take Student Understanding Deeper with Summarizing
Do you want your students to move beyond passively receiving information to actively processing information? “Summarization” seems like “old hat” but it is a powerful practice that is sometimes forgotten. Learn how you can move your students from just being consumers of information to processors who then transform that information into knowledge that sticks. During this session, you will take away actionable strategies that you can use with students tomorrow. This is a hands-on session - you will practice the strategies using content from some of my favorite books!

Screencasting best practices and benefits in the classroom.
A major benefit of screencasting is that the student and parent can watch the screencast at a time when it’s best for them because learning doesn’t always take place in an academic setting.

Additionally, the students can absorb the information at their own pace by pausing and rewatching portions. Screencasts add a personal touch in ways that other methods simply cannot.

Examples of common screencast are: Tutorials, Video Lessons, Recorded
Presentations and much more.

Screencasting not only saves you time answering the same questions over and over, but it has been proven that 80% of viewers can recall a video they have seen in the past 30 days.

We will be using Screencast-o-matic. Please download the free application before the session.
Please bring content for creating a screencast.

For more information check out the document ScreencastingBestPractices in the session.

Leading the Learning
Ever feel like you arrive at school, go through the day, and wonder if anything actually got done? The day-to-day operations tend to impede our opportunity for administrators to grow and learn in their position. The administrator in a school is responsible for leading a learning organization. If we are going to lead the learning in schools we need to find a way to do it together. Too often administrators are left on an island because they are the only person in the building with a particular role. This session provides a road map for taking ownership of your learning, while still leading the work done at the building level.

Hacking Leadership
Water is amazing and seemingly always finds a way. It has the ability to form, replenish our system, power equipment, and can wipe out entire cities. Leaders have the same properties.  Some end up conforming to their environment as water would with a cup or bowl. Some have the power to wipe out entire populations and others lift the level of the land. The best leaders take little openings and create space for those they lead. They find the smallest cracks of opportunity and create a path that was not there before. They shape the land. They find a way. Hacking leadership is about finding innovative solutions to issues that have plagued the system for years, and implementing them tomorrow. The focus is on practical application. We all know the problems exist, but knowledge of problems does not make our daily life in schools easier.  Utilizing the tools in Hacking Leadership will allow you and your team to find the openings and create space for those you lead. Space to learn. Space to teach. Space to thrive.

Building Capacity with a Peer Tutoring Center
One thing most educators can agree on would be that we wish we could multiply ourselves to provide more small group and 1:1 instruction to students with specific skill needs. One great way to accomplish this is through a well trained peer tutoring team. Anna Durfee built a successful tutoring center at Compass Academy that has been helping students for five years. Through tech resources like a scheduling program and collaborative documents we can share the tips and tricks discovered through trial and error.

#BookSnaps – Snapchat for Annotation & Digital Visualization
During this interactive workshop, participants will actively explore the science, creation, and impact of #BookSnaps.

The Snapchat app is a primary form of communication for students of all ages. Why not teach them digital citizenship by showing them a relevant way to utilize the app for learning purposes, or as I like to call it--EDU-Awesomeness! Let’s speak the students’ language using Snapchat to share excerpts of a book while annotating with #BookSnaps.

This fascinating strategy engages both hemispheres of the brain and increases learning retention. Join this workshop session to explore how students AND staff create BookSnap reflections to make their thinking visible.
Since August 2016, school districts and students all over the world (seventeen different countries) are creating #BookSnaps and sharing their love of learning.

*For Non-Snapchat users, we will also explore creating #BookSnaps with Google apps, and you will leave with an abundance of resources to utilize the #BookSnaps strategy no matter the content area.
#BookSnaps are relevant, engaging, and learning disguised as FUN. You don’t want to miss this session!

REAL Engagement
Would you like to peek into the minds of the learners you serve? Yes.

Then, prepare to have your mind blown during this workshop.

Participants will explore a variety of opportunities to respond to any content area, at any grade level, both with and without technology. You will leave with a treasure chest of precious gems to boost engagement and amplify student voice within your learning environment.

Each engaging strategy presented will allow the participants an avenue to express their thinking in a non-threatening manner. The concept of peeking into the minds (and hearts) of those we serve helps us to understand the learner and how they are connecting the content to their REAL life. The strategies and tools shared during this session are easily implemented into any area of curriculum as well as staff meetings or professional development settings. Therefore, you can begin utilizing them instantly!

Are you ready for this engaging, mind-blowing (or better yet, mind-reading) experience?
